This is Egypt’s principal Mediterranean port. The city was founded by Alexander the great and became the capital of his enormous empire. Here stood the lighthouse of the Pharos, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world: and the renowned library of Alexandria, the seat of learning, where Homer’s epic texts were edited, where the Julian calendar was invented and where the circumference of the earth was measured.
Visit Pompey’s Pillar, now almost the sole relic of ancient Alexandria and walk south to see the Catacombs of Kom El Shogafa, dating from the Roman period. On the site of the famous lighthouse now stands the Qaytbay fort, which houses the Naval Museum. To catch a glimpse of Roman Alexandria visit the recently discovered Roman Odeon, the only Roman open-air theatre in Egypt. Or even drive west for 60 miles to visit the World War II graves at El Alamein.
