To millions of Arabic speakers, Cairo - standing at the crossroads of Africa and the Middle East - is the semi-mythical capital of the Arab world. Home to over 16 million of these Arabic speakers, it is chaotic, noisy, seething with humanity and for those blessed with the virtue of patience, exhilarating.
Dating from its first foundations in 969AD, Cairo's eclectic feel of Arabic backstreets, minarets, mud brick houses, Christian churches and the pharaonic wonders of the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx all blend beautifully as the make up and fabric of this city's timeless charm. Cairo is a vast sprawl of a city, bounded on one side by the greatest desert in the world and bisected by one of the greatest rivers. Here, Africa meets Europe; the near East intersects with the classic West. Not only every culture but every era seems to be thrown together in one magnificent jumble.
Visit the traditional sites – the Sphinx, the Valley Temple, the Pyramids of Giza – and then venture into the desert to see the bent pyramid at Dashur, the ancient capital of Memphis and the necropolis of Sakkara.
There is no city in the world quite like Cairo. The Egyptian museum houses the treasures of Tutenkhamun among many other fabulous works of art. The Mahmoud Khalil collection of impressionist paintings and sculptures includes Manet, Monet, Seurat, Renoir, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Rodin and others. These are just two of the many museums that attract the visitor.
Wander through the old city to the Ben Ezra synagogue and the Christian quarter where the holy family lived during their three year stay in Egypt. Continue to the old Moslem Quarter with its many minaretted mosques, the Mohammed Ali Mosque, the Citadel of Saladin, and the Khan Khalili Bazaar.
