The Oracle was so famous and revered that in 524BC, the Persian warrior, Cambyses, dispatched an army 50,000 strong from Thebes to destroy it. The entire army never reached their destination and perished in the desert. Two centuries later, Alexander the Great made the journey to Amun, where the Oracle proclaimed him the new ruler of Egypt.
