Formerly known as Thebes, Luxor was the capital of the New Kingdom and a focal point of the ancient world; here lie the famous temples of Luxor and Karnak, as well as the antiquities museum. The fabulous and gigantic statue of Karnac has huge 70 ft columns, 20ft in diameter and all beautifully inscribed. Amongst them stands the giant statue of Egypt’s famous pharaoh – Ramses II.
On the west bank are the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, both the warrens of gloriously painted tombs. Here, you see the twin colossi of Memnon and the mortuary temple of Queen Hatsheput.
The temples on the East bank, where the sun rises and heralds the new day, were built for living, and the tombs on the West Bank, where the sun disappears and heralds the night, were built for the dead.
